How can I restore it without ruining it altogether?

My dad gave me a Kris (curvy sword-thing) that he got overseas about 30 years ago. its beautiful, i can see that the blade is engraved/decorated... but the blade has completely rusted over. I want to try to restore it/remove the rust, etc at home... how can i do that without wrecking the whole thing?
